Instagram story overlay tools
An overlay is a transparent graphic layered on top of a photo, adding information without replacing the image underneath. It's a small distinction, but it's the difference between a post that shows your photo with context and one that shows a generic template instead.
Where overlays are useful
Fitness — workout stats or a GPS route layered over a photo from the activity itself.
Market data — a price chart or portfolio number layered over a trading setup or workspace photo.
Creator content — follower counts, video stats, or platform badges layered over relevant footage or screenshots.
How to make one
- Identify the data source (Strava, an exchange, YouTube, whatever it is)
- Open the relevant tool—see moqop.com/apps for the full list
- Switch to transparent/overlay mode instead of a full design
- Choose which data to show and where it sits
- Export as a transparent PNG
- Add it to your photo in Instagram
What makes an overlay work
Contrast is the main thing—the overlay needs to read clearly against whatever photo it sits on, which usually means a light overlay on a dark photo or vice versa. And restraint matters just as much: an overlay with two or three key numbers reads better than one trying to show everything at once. The photo underneath should still be the reason someone stops scrolling; the data is there to add context, not compete with it.
